Monsoon and Flood Awareness Guide

Monsoon and Flood Awareness Guide

Monsoon season is on the horizon. Please exercise caution and review our annually updated list of recommendations and resources provided by the City of Flagstaff Stormwater Section:

  • Streets flood quickly! A car can float in as little as a foot of water. Do not attempt to cross flooded areas. Respect all traffic barricades.
  • Please call 911 to report a flooding emergency.
  • Prepare an emergency kit in case of flooding or power outages.
  • For street or right-of-way flooding concerns, please call Public Works at 928-213-2100.
  • Be sure that surrounding drainages and channels are clear and free of trashcans, trash, and other debris. Fences and debris become barricades and can lead to flooding. To report drainage and debris issues, call 928-213-2400.
  • Recycle used motor oil – never place it in the trash, on the ground, or down storm drains.
  • Make sure that the sandbags placed to protect your property do not negatively impact neighbors. Residents can pick up sandbags at any time at the designated self-serve area at Thorpe Park (500 N Aztec St., in the parking lot between Frances Short Pond and the softball fields). Residents who are elderly or have a disability and need assistance with their sandbags can call the City’s service request line at 928-213-2102.
  • Contact your property insurance agent to obtain flood insurance to protect your home and property. Homeowner’s insurance does NOT cover flooding. Even if you’re not in the mapped floodplain, you may be subject to flooding from local drainage.
  • Talk to the Stormwater Section at 928-213-2472 about steps you can take to protect your house or business. There are ways to modify your building to minimize flood damage.
  • The Flagstaff Sustainability Office offers a flood-proofing grant to qualified applicants.
  • If you have private property flooding concerns, the Stormwater Management Section may be able to help. Contact the Stormwater Inspector at 928-213-2474.
  • Forecasts, watches, and warnings for Northern Arizona are issued by the National Weather Service. The National Weather Service also offers a resource for potential impacts to burned area watersheds.
  • The City hosts real-time rain and stream flow data online.
